This 2026 trip to the Dominican Republic was the sixth time that I’ve been called to travel with youth and other adults on a mission for God. It’s been a real privilege—and a joy—to observe the relationships that have been initiated, nurtured, and matured, with each other and with God during these weeks. I’ve told both Ben, and his predecessor Rachel, that each trip has been different, and each, in its own way, has been the best I’ve ever taken.

Our groups, no matter the size, are welcomed to a communion service by our youth minister on the last evening in San Juan de la Maguana. That worship experience reminds me that our work in missions is very much a symbolic breaking of our bodies and a pouring out of our blood through the hot, hard, and heavy work we do in devotion to our Dominican friends and to each other. This year’s group was especially notable, as this was the first year we had not labored in a construction project benefitting the now-operating clinic. All who labored and became weary on our mission found rest in the comforting arms of each other—and in the amazing grace and presence of Christ.

Alas, it must be my last trip to the wonderful places and beautiful people of the Dominican Republic. I have been blessed beyond measure on each of these missions; my life has been changed indeed.

I mentioned to our group that although some of them might not remember me in the future, I will remember each of them for the rest of my life. They were and are a special group of beautiful people, each with gifts to appreciate and celebrate.

I am grateful that I had the honor and privilege to share this mission with Ben, CJ, Shelley, Kylie, Allison, Carson, Drew, Garrett, George, Jamie, Kemper, Madelyn, Maggie, Shannon, Vincent and Wynn. I give my heartfelt thanks to them, to the church, and to Christ.
