"The Trent Symposium provided that rarest of opportunities; a chance to pursue excellence in ministry alongside faithful peers and wise mentors who love the church and care passionately about demonstrating the love of Christ to the world.  It would be impossible to come away from this experience not feeling renewed and better equipped to handle the many facets of ministry.  What a blessing!"

"This Symposium has become formative to my ministry. I received new insights about preaching, teaching, worship, and countless other dimensions of church life. Of seminal interest was what I learned about ways to create a healthy climate and culture in the congregation. While a good seminary education is essential to the ministry, serving in the parish always raises new questions. This Symposium bridges the gap between seminary and practice. Second Presbyterian Church in Roanoke, Virginia, in partnership with Union Theological Seminary have created a model for Presbyterian connectionalism in the best way: sharing the wisdom of fruitful ministry, caring enough to invest in the church's future, and creating a community of renewal. Seasoned pastors and other church leaders shared their wisdom from experience in decades of fruitful ministry. They cared enough about the church's future to invest tremendous time and energy in giving vision, skills, and spiritual renewal. And they created a community in the Spirit's leading that generated support and the challenge to grow unlike any I have known."

"The Trent Symposium reminded me in a powerful way "why I do what I do."  The speakers showed me that my identity as a pastor is not defined by the weekly demands of parish ministry.  My identity is defined instead by my calling to serve God and God's people in the ministry of Word and Sacrament.  And if I can remember that calling, if I can always remember it, then even the tedium of ministry becomes a joy and a privilege."

Most of my feelings about the symposium center around how well what they taught us fits right in with the questions and issues that were just starting to arise for me as a newly ordained pastor with a couple years worth of parish experience. What a tremendous blessing it was to discuss the challenges of conflict, the finer points of preaching, ways to carry out pastoral care and Christian education, issues about church leadership, and so on with a group of mentors and peers who had such an extraordinary amount of insight. I am very grateful to George, Ken, Ed, 2nd Roanoke, Union-PSCE, the Trent family, and everyone else who had the vision and talent to make this possible. Not a day has gone by where I haven't remembered and used something I learned at the Trent Symposium. What a special gift!
