Benevolence
has always been a top priority at Second Presbyterian. This
community of faith takes seriously Christs command to
love one another and to help provide for the needs of others.
This is done through the three levels of the churchs courts
(General Assembly, Synod and Presbytery) as well as at the local
level. This commitment is reflected not only in a monetary way,
but also through the number of ways in which church members
volunteer their time to a variety of causes, including:
*Dominican
Republic: The church organizes a team to visit the Dominican
Republic each year to provide assistance with medical needs,
construction, and teaching. For more information on the 2007
trip, click here.
*Katrina
Disaster Relief: We have sent two work teams to the Bay
St. Louis where they worked on homes and provided assistance
to those devastated by the hurricane.
*Habitat
for Humanity: uses donations of money, land, materials, and
volunteer labor to provide homes which local low-income families
purchase at no interest and no profit.
*West
End Center: engages in year round programs for youth.
*Trust:
tends to crisis calls and provides emergency travel assistance.
*SE
Presbyterian Center: provides emergency financial help and
other types of support for individuals and families.
*Roanoke
Area Ministries: day shelter and emergency financial assistance
for the homeless and those at risk.
