Youth Application

Application Immunizations
INFORMATION SHEET
Where are we going?
To San Juan de la Maguana in the Dominican Republic. We stay at
the guesthouse operated by Solid Rock Missions (www.solidrockmissions.org).
We spend our first night and our last night in Santo Domingo (or
nearby).
When do we go?
July 7-14, 2007
Our flight leaves Roanoke at 7:00 a.m. on the 7th. We fly through
Atlanta to Santa Domingo. Our flight arrives at home in Roanoke
at app. 11:00 p.m on July 14.
How much does it cost?
For youth: $500; for adults: the total cost is estimated at $1300.
These fees will be payable in three installments: a deposit due
with the announcement of the team; two installments due in February
and April 2007.
What will we do?
Everyone will help with either a Vacation Bible School at the Jim
Smith School in El Rosario (a small village near San Juan) or in
construction at the school. All youth will help with the Bible School.
Youth will probably also be able to help with construction during
the afternoon time if they wish.
In addition to these projects, everyone will have the opportunity
to see and experience life in the Dominican Republic, meet Dominican
families, get to know Rod and Sandy Nofzinger (the guesthouse hosts
for Solid Rock), see Santo Domingo where Columbus first landed in
the new world, and experience life in a country not our own where
they speak a language not our own.
Everyone will have a chance to share the love and grace of God and
receive love and grace in return. We promise many hugs from many
children.
What needs to be done to get ready?
For those involved with the Bible School, we will schedule several
meetings for planning and preparing for the Bible School experience.
Youth will lead the Bible School; adults will help them. These meetings
are REQUIRED.
The entire team will gather at the outset of the planning period
and at the end of the planning period. These meetings allow us an
opportunity for team building, information sharing, and a very important
team function: PACKING.
Team members are also responsible for obtaining all the required
immunizations. See a separate sheet for details. Those shots need
to begin months ahead of our departure date.
Who do we need?
A complete Bibles & Bricks team of 30 people looks something
like this:
-Fifteen Youth
Each youth will be assigned to a VBS team. We need app. 5 classroom
teachers. These will probably be the youth most fluent in Spanish.
But rest assured, translators are available. The remaining youth
will assist with either crafts, recreation, music, opening assembly,
life skills, or another VBS team. Exact assignments will be worked
out as we plan together.
-ten VBS adults
-one VBS coordinator
-one coordinator for each area: classroom, crafts, recreation,
music, opening assembly, life skills
-one doctor (could be a member of the construction team)
-one trip administrator (could be a member of the construction
team)
-one pastor
-approximately 5 adults for construction
What expectations do we have?
Bibles & Bricks is a challenging and life changing experience.
Participation with a team is a privilege. All team members will
be required to complete an application outlining the reasons for
their interest in the trip and the gifts they can offer the team.
Team members are also required to be active participants in the
life of Second Pres during the year of preparation. For youth that
means regular attendance at either Senior High Church School or
Sunday evening Senior Highs, preferably both, during the year of
preparation.
How do I apply?
Complete an application and return it to the church office (or to
Nancy Morris).
APPLICATION DEADLINE: NOVEMBER 12
The team will be announced in early December. An orientation meeting
will be held in January when we hope to announce a planning schedule.
